101st (Northumbrian) Regiment RA - MLRS Regiment

101 Regiment Royal Artillery“The Geordie and West Riding Gunners” are the Royal Artillery’s Army Reserve unit in the North East of England and the West Riding of Yorkshire.  The Regiment is the only Army Reserve unit to hold, maintain and train on the armoured tracked M270, Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).

The MLRS is the British Army’s main ‘precision fire’ weapon system, able to engage targets at long ranges with extreme accuracy. Each battery has its own reconnaissance and command sections which control the MLRS movement and firing, as well as the delivery of ammunition. The 3 man MLRS detachment will often operate and move independently, as will the other elements of the of the battery, such as the 2 man ammunition crew.

Under the Army 2020 restructuring project the Regiment re-rolled to become a Depth Fires regiment and is now paired with its Regular Regiment counterpart 26 Regiment RA.

106th (Yeomanry) Regiment RA – Air Defence

106 (Yeomanry) Regiment Royal Artillery are the British Army’s only reserve anti air warfare regiment.  They operate the lethal high velocity missile Starstreak and specialise in delivering vital close support air defence to the UK’s manoeuvre forces, providing protection to critical assets from a range of airborne threats.  106 Regiment works closely with its regular counterparts from 12 Regiment and 16 Regiment and all 3 Regiments are part of 7 Air Defence Group.

The Starstreak Lightweight Multiple Launcher (LML) has an automatic fire unit and can be carried on any light wheeled vehicle, such as a Land Rover.  The multiple launcher employs three canister missiles together with clip-on equipment and a standard aiming unit. Three targets can be engaged in quick succession without the need for reloading.  The Starstreak portable shoulder-launched (single missile) is assembled and ready to fire in a few seconds. Preparation for firing involves clipping an aiming unit on to the missile canister.  The aiming unit includes an optical head consisting of a stabilisation system, an aiming mark injector and a monocular sight. The target is acquired and optically tracked using the monocular sight and aiming mark.
